Sarah Sousa is a poet and multidisciplinary artist. She is the author of the poetry collections See the Wolf, named a 2019 ‘Must Read’ book by the Massachusetts Center for the Book, Split the Crow and Church of Needles, as well as the chapbooks Yell, which won the Summer Tide Pool Prize at C&R Press, and Hex which won the Cow Creek Chapbook Prize. Her poems have appeared in the Massachusetts Review, North American Review, the Southern Poetry Review, Verse Daily among others. Her collage/visual poetry has appeared in Tupelo Quarterly, Matter Press and New Delta Review. Honors include a Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Fellowship and a Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship. Weave, Twine, Dye, Spin, Stitch
My work centers around traditional textile techniques with a heavy dose of experimentation. Basic weave structure and stitch are at the heart of my process. Animal (wool) and cellulose fibers, foraged ‘natural’ and manmade elements are my primary materials. I’m currently exploring alternative photographic processes on both paper and fabric for the ability to bring imagery into my practice. The juxtaposition of industrial/manmade decay in a rural environment has always fascinated; the tension at play in both my textual and textural work.
